Our present situation is one in which we desire the hyper fast (information) and the painstakingly wrought (artisan everything) simultaneously. All the world’s maps at our fingers in a second, crackers made with knuckle-ground flour and single-origin sesame seeds. Take-out coffee, sourced from a single field in Northern Panama.

If you’re going to make it out alive you’ve got to pick your battles, and with coffee we choose battle -- which is to say, DIY. Nothing against cafes (except the ones where you’re robbed blind, have your name misspelled by a snarky barista and receive the jaundiced eye from every patron within earshot who heard you decline the dollar donation for yet another killer whale preservation society), but even on the busiest morning we’ve got a couple minutes and a thermos for the road.
