Best Pizza in Melbourne at a Glance

Let’s look at some of the best pizza in Melbourne at a glance:

Alright, now let’s go onto the big list of where to eat the best pizza in Melbourne!

1. Pizza Pizza Pizza

  • What we like: The GIANT New York-style slices – perfect for a quick bite on the go or post-drinks snack.
  • Take note: Seating is limited, so best to book if you want to nab a table inside on the weekends.

Pizza Pizza Pizza feels like it could’ve been plucked straight from a New York side street. The front is a takeaway counter where you can grab a huge slice or two to takeaway. But, if you know where to look, you’ll find a hidden cocktail bar and cosy dining space behind the “staff only” sign. The vibe is decidedly New York jazz bar, with dim lighting and rich blue hues throughout the joint. It’s certainly intimate, and a great no-frills date night spot that still has something a little bit special about it.

The menu is short but on point, sticking to what it does best – big, foldable New York-style pizzas, served by the slice or as an 18-inch pie. The pepperoni is a must-try, with just the right amount of grease and crunch. But if you’re in the mood for something different, the magic mushroom pizza delivers earthy mushrooms with a touch of indulgence from truffle oil. Vegans and dairy-free/gluten-free diners are sorted here too, so it’s easy to please the whole crew. It’s comfort food done right: familiar, satisfying, and perfect for late-night pizza cravings.

Best pizza melbourne doc carlton

2. DOC Carlton

  • What we like: Authentic Italian ingredients and traditional flavours, with an emphasis on simplicity and quality
  • Take note: No bookings for small groups, so get in early or expect to queue.

I’m not normally someone to recommend a pizza chain but DOC is an absolute exception. With shops in Carlton, Mornington, Southbank, St Kilda (and Surry Hills in Sydney), DOC feels like a little slice of Italy dropped right into Melbourne. I love the Carlton DOC in particular, and if you score a spot outside under the olive trees, with a glass of wine or Aperol Spritz in hand, it’s easy to imagine you’re somewhere along the Amalfi Coast.

The pizzas here are deliberately simple but executed with precision. Thin, crisp bases form the foundation, with toppings like San Daniele prosciutto, buffalo mozzarella, and fresh basil. They skip the heavy-handed approach, so each ingredient really stands out. Beyond pizza, there’s also a range of antipasti, salads, and desserts like tiramisu. No pineapple in sight – just honest Italian classics that stay true to their roots (but they do cater for gluten-free and dairy-free folks!)

  • Address: 295 Drummond Street, Carlton VIC 3053
  • Opening Hours: Monday to Thursday 5pm – late, Friday to Sunday 12pm – late

Best pizza melbourne figlia
Figlia | Source: Supplied

3. Figlia

  • What we like: Organic sourdough bases that bring the pizza flavour and texture to the next level!
  • Take note: Walk-ins are welcome, but it can fill up fast—especially on weekends.

Figlia fits perfectly into East Brunswick – it’s relaxed and trendy with just the right amount of cool without trying too hard. Run by the crew behind Tipo 00 and Osteria Ilaria, it brings a taste of the city’s Italian dining scene to the suburbs. With a bright, open dining space where you can see the chefs cook your pizza in Figlia’s signature hybrid gas/wood-fire ovens and impeccable service, Figlia is the go-to pizza joint in the inner-north when you’re craving pizza, but want it a bit of an upscale dining experience too.

There focus here of course is pizza, but you’ll also find a mix of chargrilled snacks you can enjoy pre-pizza (also for the gluten-free diners – Figlia’s gluten-free focaccia is out of the world). Now, once you do get to the pizza, you’ll be forgiven if you have a hard time choosing. The menu is rotating, so don’t get too attached to any one pizza. However, you’ll find a solid mix of traditional pizzas like Napoletana with marinara, anchovy, and capers to more creative pizzas like spicy pork sugo, bullhorn peppers, mozzarella, and.

If you’re feeling thirsty, Figlia leans heavily into natural wines, with a selection that highlights both Italian and Australian varieties. You’ll find an inventive cocktail list too, a selection of beers and of course, non-alcoholic options for the sober among us.

Thin Slizzy | Source: Ally Burnie

4. Thin Slizzy

  • What we like: Fun, rock-themed menu with creative pizzas like “Meatallica” and “Prawn of the Dead”
  • Take note: Crust can be a little chewy sometimes!

Thin Slizzy feels totally at home in Collingwood – fun, a little rough around the edges, and full of personality. If you love your pizza with a side of rock-and-roll energy, Thin Slizzy is the best pizza place in Melbourne for you. With music blasting and cheeky pizza names that give a nod to the rock and roll lifestyle, it’s a venue where you go to not only eat good food but have a damn good time too.

Thin Slizzy’s menu is as fun as it sounds – simple but creative, with pizzas designed to match the vibe. You’ve got classics with a twist, like the “Meatallica”, loaded with all the meats, and the “Smashing Pumpkin”, which brings roasted pumpkin and seasonal flair. Then there’s the “Ace of Spuds”, a potato pizza that’s pure carb-filled comfort. It’s pizza that feels familiar but keeps things interesting, perfect whether you’re adventurous or just want something easy and tasty to enjoy with a cold beer.

5. +39 Pizzeria

  • What we like: Authentic Italian flavours with high-quality ingredients.
  • Take note: This is a popular spot with tourists and locals alike, so book ahead if you want to nab a table on weekends.

Tucked away on Little Bourke Street, you’ll smell +39 Pizzeria before you see it – the smell of fresh pizza dough wafts from the oven and right out the door. Named after Italy’s international dial code, +39 reflects both its roots and vibe – unpretentious yet full of flavour.

The pizzas here are playful but traditional, with dough that puffs up perfectly from the roaring oven. The Calabrese brings heat with nduja and hot salami, while the V.I.P. (Very Italian Pizza) offers a mix of buffalo mozzarella, sundried tomatoes, and pine nuts. There’s also Quattro Funghi, packed with mushrooms and truffle oil, for earthy goodness.

Beyond the pizzas, +39 Pizzeria offers antipasti, fresh salads, and pasta dishes, with must-try desserts like tiramisu and bomboloni.

Shop 225 | Source: Supplied

6. Shop 225

  • What we like: Coeliac-friendly pizza!
  • Take note: The GF pizza is amazing, the GF pasta can be hit or miss

Shop 225 in Pascoe Vale South is a game-changer for gluten-free folks (and with with a range of dietary needs from vegan to halal and beyond). As Australia’s first pizzeria to be accredited by Coeliac Australia, they’ve created a space where everyone, regardless of dietary needs, can enjoy great food and in particular, great pizza. With wood-fired ovens and a passion for traditional Italian flavours, the focus here is on making food that’s simple, delicious, and inclusive – whether you’re gluten-free, vegan, or just love a good pizza.

The pizzas at Shop 225 have that perfect Neapolitan touch – thin, blistered crusts with premium toppings. Classics like the Barone (pomodoro, salami, olives, chilli) and Il Dottore with Calabrian sausage and porcini mushrooms are a must try, while vegans get their own moment with creative plant-based options. And if you’re craving something sweet, don’t miss the vegan Nutella calzone – it’s so good you’d be hard-pressed to tell it apart from the real thing.

Melbourne best pizza red sparrow
Red Sparrow Pizza | Source: Supplied

7. Red Sparrow Pizza

  • What we like: The pizza is amazing, but we also love the customer service!
  • Take note: Some reviews suggest the pizza can come out a little on the under-cooked spectrum.

Red Sparrow Pizza isn’t just for vegans – it’s for anyone who loves great pizza. Tucked away on Smith Street in Collingwood, Red Sparrow feels exactly how a pizzeria should – relaxed, welcoming and fun. The wood-fired oven gives the dough that perfect charred edge, and whether you’re vegan or not, you won’t miss the dairy or meat here – the food is just that good. They even snagged “Best Pizza in Victoria” back in 2020, proving plant-based pizza can absolutely compete with the classics.

The menu doesn’t play it safe – expect creative combos and bold flavours. You’ll find pizzas like the Cheeseburger with pickles and special sauce, and a Banh Mi pizza that gives a tasty nod to the Vietnamese classic. There’s also BBQ “chicken” for those craving something saucy and smoky.

For pizza alternatives, you can munch on the “Not Wings” which are a hit (even amongst the carnivores) and for dessert, you can’t go wrong with the vegan cheesecake. Everything on the menu feels indulgent but thoughtful – so grab your vegan mates and get amongst it!

  • Address: 406 Smith St, Collingwood VIC 3066
  • Opening hours: Tues-Thurs 5pm-10pm, Fri 4pm-10pm, Sat 12pm-10pm
  • Phone: (03) 9417 1454
Pie hella honey min
Sunnyside Slice | Source: Supplied

8. Sunnyside Slice

  • What we like: Food, atmosphere, customer service all 10/10
  • Take note: It’s on the pricier side for pizza – with most pizzas $32 or more (but worth it, honestly!)

Sunnyside Sliced in Mentone brings old-school New York slice-shop energy to Melbourne’s bayside. With 18-inch pies and Sicilian pan-style pizzas, it’s a super chill spot that nails the balance between delicious but not pretentious. Walk in and grab a slice or two to takeaway, or sit down and enjoy the local buzz.

It’s all about the big hitters at Sunnyside Slice. Their pepperoni pizza is incredible, but the thick-crust Sicilian pan pies are next level, loaded with cheesy goodness and delish toppings. I’d have to say though, the sauces are what make Sunnyside Slice one of the best pizza spots in Melbourne – punchy and incredibly flavourful. Add a thickshake or a beer, and you’ve got the perfect combo for a casual night out with friends or family. This is comfort food at its finest – big, bold, and seriously satisfying.

  • Address: 34 Como Parade W, Mentone VIC 3194
  • Opening hours: Mon-Thurs 5pm-9pm, Fri – Sat 12pm-10pm, Sun 12pm-9pm
  • Phone: (03) 9583 4389
Best pizza melbourne deep end pizza
Deep End Pizza | Source: Supplied

9. Deep End Pizza

  • What we like: The DEEP DISH!
  • Take note: It’s closed Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday

Deep End Pizza brings some serious American flavour to Fitzroy, and they don’t hold back. The menu takes you on a tour of American pizza styles, from New York’s thin and foldable slices to Detroit’s crispy square pies and Chicago’s famously thick deep dish.

The Peppa Roni is a crowed favourite, with their house pepperoni blend, roasted capsicum, and pickled chilli adding just the right amount of kick. If you’re up for something indulgent, the White Sausage 2. – loaded with Italian sausage, taleggio, and gorgonzola – delivers big on both flavour and comfort. Plus, they’ve recently added gluten-free pizza options to the menu!

And for those who love a challenge, the Chicago-style deep dish is a must (prepare to wait 30 minutes and wear loose pants!) but trust me, it’s worth it. The stuffed deep dish style originated in Chicago in the early 1970s and is the deepest, cheesiest pizza there is. With a rich, tender bottom crust and a very thin top crust, cheese and toppings are loaded up inside, and sauce goes on top. Are you drooling yet?

For dessert – I’d absolutely recommend giving the bourbon stout float a crack (vanilla ice-cream, stout and bourbon) – it’s the perfect bevvie to wash down your pizza.

  • Address: 412a Brunswick St, Fitzroy VIC 3065
  • Opening hours: Thurs-Fri 5pm-11pm, Sat-Sun 12–2:30 pm, 5–10:30 pm
  • Phone: (03) 8589 2983
Best pizza melbourne pizza dasporto
Pizza d’ASPORTO | Source: Supplied

11. Pizza d’ASPORTO

  • What we like: No fuss pizza with great customer service.
  • Take note: Pizza base crunch can bit hit or miss – it seems to flip flop between perfectly crunchy and a bit undercooked, based on reviews

Pizza d’ASPORTO nails that sweet spot between laid-back and authentic, bringing southern Italian charm to Melbourne’s west. Whether you’re at their Yarraville, Essendon, or Williamstown locations, the atmosphere is always warm and familiar (you can just tell it’s family-run and owned!) The Yarraville location is the heart of the operation, offering space for up to 160 diners and a lively outdoor communal area that spills into a park.

Pizza d’ASPORTO’s founder Claude actually started learning the ropes of pizza making from his uncle when he was just a kid, and he’s been perfecting his craft ever since. Now, his team uses a unique house blend of Italian flours for the dough, cold-fermenting it for 72 hours to create a hybrid of Neapolitan and Roman-style pizzas. The result? A perfect combination of airy crusts with just the right crispiness.

On the white-base side, must-tries include the Zucchine e Gamberetti with prawns, zucchini, mint, and chilli, and the indulgent Porcini with truffle oil and pecorino. If you’re after a San Marzano tomato base, the Margherita and Bufala deliver all the classic Italian comfort. For something a bit bolder, try the Diavola, packed with hot salami and chilli, or the Mare e Monte, which pairs prawns with prosciutto and mushrooms. Whatever you choose, you’ll leave Pizza d’ASPORTO with a full belly and a smile on your face.

  • Address: 2-6 Ballarat St, Yarraville VIC 3013

12. Takeaway Pizza

  • What we like: The thin, crispy bases – slaps every time!
  • Take note: Weekends can get busy – so book ahead to avoid disappointment.

Takeaway Pizza in Preston is so unassuming, so unpretentious, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s “just another pizza joint”. Part pizza shop, part wine bar, Takeaway Pizza is one of the best pizza spots in Melbourne. If Preston feels like it’s a little out of the way, trust me when I say it’s worth the drive.

Takeaway Pizza keeps things fun and creative with a lineup that’s anything but basic. You’ve got options like the Pastrami & Marrow with house-cured pastrami, bone marrow, and a signature meat sauce, or the Mortadella & Fermented Honey, which combines sausage with a sweet, garlicky crust and lemon thyme. For sweet-and-spicy lovers, the Salami & Honey balances jalapeños and fermented garlic honey perfectly.

If you’re dining with vegan/gluten-free mates, you can add vegan mozzarella or gluten-free bases for just $2! Unheard of, really. Drinks are a highlight too, with tiki-inspired cocktails built around rum and mezcal, and a small rotating wine list featuring boutique Australian producers.

  • Address: 535 High St, Preston VIC 3072
