Why Nike’s New Everyday Sneaker Already Looks Like a Modern Classic

In Beaverton, what’s old is new. Nike loves to revisit yesteryear’s sneakers, with the vintage models like the Vomero 5 and Killshot 2 becoming best sellers decades after their initial launches.

In a way, Nike’s latest everyday sneaker, called the C1ty, takes its own stroll down memory lane.

But instead of straight-up reviving an older model, like it’s done countless times before, Nike here pulled in elements from a couple of modern classics to create a brand-new silhouette that feels both fresh and familiar.

The most obvious, and recent, reference point for the C1ty is none other than the General Purpose Shoe, a model made in collaboration with Tom Sachs back in 2022.

While that design received widespread acclaim upon release and sold out in every available color, Nike suspended its partnership with Sachs after allegations of inappropriate behavior by the artist surfaced late last year. (The two are reportedly working together again heading into 2025.)
